Glossary
Pre-conditioning with PRS-Sport was tested and evaluated by athletes and trainers from different disciplines. Results were interpreted by comparing athletes using PRS-Sport to those using a placebo (controls).
PRS-Sport: Physical Recovery Science
-Sport is a food supplement based on natural extract from Opuntia ficus indica (prickly pear cactus). It was developed by scientists and validated by experts.
PRS-Sport accelerates the production of HSP whose role is to improve recovery after physical exercise and stress.
- The prickly pear fruits are considered as food
- There are no known negative side effects for the product.
- There are no known contra-indications for the product*
- It is well adapted to sport nutrition regimens.
* Except in case of known allergy to one of the components.
Opuntia Ficus Indica
The prickly pear cactus grows in some of the hottest and most arid regions of the world. It is common in deserst of North and South America, Africa and the Mediterranean area. Because of its ability to survive extreme of low and high temperatures (-10C at night and +50C during the day) and drought the cactus likely possesses active molecules protecting cells and restoring cell functions.
Research from Recovery Science Company and its associates from ICP have identified the mechanisms inducing production of HSP (heat shock proteins) by the prickly pear cactus to protect its tissues. They have developed an extract with similar properties. This extract pre-conditions the body allowing the human cells to react quickly and efficiently to damages triggered by a rise in body temperature during physical exercise.
Burn Out
Physical and/or emotional exhaustion especially as the result of a long-term stress.
HSP
HSP (Heat Shock Proteins) are a group of highly conserved proteins present in the cells of all living organisms. Their primary function is to interact with naïve and denatured proteins in order to protect the cell structure by facilitating the folding and refolding of those proteins. Discovered 40 years ago, they are naturally produced by the body when its temperature reaches a few degrees above physical temperature.
Their role is absolutely crucial for the survival of the cell.
- To protect nuclear and cytoplasmic proteins
- To repair damaged proteins
- To eliminate badly damaged proteins and structures
- To fold properly newly synthesized proteins
- To carry proteins after synthesis.
HSP are present in the body in limited quantity. They are synthesized and released a few hours after the beginning of physical activity. The amount of HSP released is directly proportional to the amount of damages to repair. Unfortunately this critical resource is in short supply.
Over Training
Over training occurs when the volume and intensity of an individual’s exercise exceeds their recovery capacity. Over-training may be accompanied by one or more concomitant symptoms (persistent fatigue and muscle soreness, loss of motivation, insomnia) and can lead to increased incidence of injuries and increased susceptibility to infections.
Oxidative Stress
Oxidative stress is caused by an imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen and a biological system’s ability to readily detoxify the reactive intermediates or easily repair the resulting damages.
